CALENDER OF ARTS EVENTS TO AIR: April 24, 2008

NOW IT’S TIME FOR A LOOK AT SOME OF THE ARTS EVENTS CURRENTLY HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY

University Music and University Theatre will present a full-staged production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, opening on Thursday, April 24, and continuing through two weekends of performances until May 3. Curtain time is 8:00 PM in the University of Guam’s Fine Arts Theatre, and tickets may be purchased at the door or reserved by calling the UOG Endowment Foundation at 735-2957.

St. John’s School will present, “The Maiden’s Net”, an original play based on Chamorro folk legends written by St John’s students and directed by Allan Nazareno and Jenny Boden. The play will debut on Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, at 7:00 PM in St. John’s Parish Hall. To learn more about this production call 646-8080.

The Chamorro Artists Association and the Bank of Guam is now showing an exhibit of art work by Jin Park through Thursday, May 8. The works are on display in the second floor lobby of the Bank’s Hagatna Branch during the bank’s normal hours of operation. The ISLA Center for the Arts at the University of Guam is now exhibiting art work selected from entries to the annual Art-a-Thon fundraiser. The show will be on display until Friday, April 25. ISLA’s hours are from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, and from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Saturday. The Cantate Community Choir will present a concert titled, “Cantate Rocks!”, featuring classic rock music and the local band, Renaissance. The concert is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, at the Rack in the Compadres Mall, Dededo, beginning at 7:00 PM. Minors are welcome as there will be no alcohol served that evening. Notre Dame School’s Theater Program will present,” Circus Olympus”, a mythical comedy in two acts by Lindsay Price, on Thursday and Friday, May 1 and 2, beginning at 7:00 PM in the Notre Dame Auditorium. Admission is by donation and everyone is invited to attend.

The Harvest Christian Academy will present a Band concert titled, “Movie Magic”, on Friday, May 2, at 7:00 PM in the Harvest Christian Auditorium. Donations to support Harvest’s Music Program will be gratefully accepted.

Gef Pa’go’s annual Kantan Minagof Song Festival, will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4, at the Gef Pa’go Cultural Center in Historic Inalahan. The music begins at 9:00 AM both days and goes on until sundown. In addition to music, there will be traditional arts and crafts, food, games, carabao rides and more. There will be an arts and crafts fair from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 3, at the Top O the Mar, Nimitz Hill, with a portion of the proceeds helping the work of Guam Animals In Need. GAIN will provide information on pet care, and feature pets up for adoption. Vendors may call 687-9913 to arrange for a space.

The Ceramic Celebration will feature works of ceramic art made by Professor Louis Rifkowitz of the University of Guam Art program, and all the pieces will be for sale. This event is a fundraiser for the ISLA Center, and a way for ceramic art lovers to acquire a unique piece, produced by one of Guam’s foremost ceramic artists. The Harvest Christian Academy will present their final musical event of the school year, a Choir Concert on Friday, May 9, in the Harvest Baptist Church Auditorium. The Concert begins at 7:00 PM, and donations will be gratefully accepted to support the Music Program at Harvest Christian Academy.

The GATE Theater Program, under the direction of Ray Twenter and Ann Gorby, will present a production of, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, by William Shakespeare, opening on Friday, May 9, in the GATE Tiyan Theater. The show will run for only four performances on two weekends: May 9 and 10, and May 16 and 17. Curtain time is 7:30 PM, and tickets can be purchased at the door.

Body Arts Dance Studio will present its Spring 2008 Dance Recital under the direction of Jennifer Brouard on Saturday May 10. There will be two performances, the first at 2:00 PM and the second at 6:00 PM. They will take place in the Sister Roberta Center located in the Mercy Heights Nursery in Perezville, Tamuning. This exhibit will be on display from May 15, until June 27, 2008. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, May 15, from 7:00 to 9:30 PM. The ISLA Center is located at house No.15, Dean’s Circle on the campus of the University of Guam. The Guam Symphony Society’s final concert of the season, “An Evening in Paris”, will be held on Saturday, May 17 at the Guam Hyatt Regency Resort, beginning at around 6:00 PM. As usual, this finale will be a dinner concert sponsored by the Guam Women’s Club with cocktails at 6:00, dinner at 6:30 and the music beginning around 7:30. Tickets will soon be available in the usual community outlets.

St John’s School’s performing arts program will present the musical, “Once on This Island Jr.”, based on a novel by Rosa Guy, and directed by Cecile Nazareno, on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, in the St, John’s Dale Jenkins Gymnasium. Performances on both evenings will be at 7:00 PM. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Guma’ Mami Inc. is now preparing to display artwork by persons with disabilities and artwork donated by local artists for its ninth annual art exhibit titled, “Creative Spirits”. Proceeds from the silent auction of work by clients and local artists will help improve the lives of those assisted by Guma’Mami. The date for the exhibit is Friday, May 30, at a location yet to be announced. Call 477-1757/1505 for more information about Guma’Mami.

The first will be an Instrumental Spring concert performed by St. John’s younger musicians at 2:00 PM in the Dale Jenkins Gymnasium, and the second will be an evening of Classical Music in the Church auditorium beginning at 7:00 PM. A new art organization, Los Ladrones, is planning an art show this summer and is looking for entries. The theme of the exhibit is, “What does Guam Art Look Like?”, and interested artists are asked to submit low-resolution jpeg digital examples of their work to ladrones671@gmail.com . residents. The Symphony rehearses at 7:00 PM on Monday evenings and the Chorale meets at 7:00 PM on Tuesday evenings. Rehearsals are held at the University of Guam Fine Arts
Building Music Department. All singers and instrumentalists are invited to join by visiting the website at: www.guamsymphony.org .

The ISLA Center for the Arts is looking for interested persons to volunteer one or more hours a week to help with its programs. You can be trained to guide tours of ISLA’s exhibits, prepare artwork for display, or help in running fundraisers such as the annual Art-A-Thon. The ISLA Center is located at house No.15, Dean’s Circle on the campus of the University of Guam. ISLA’s hours are from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, and from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturday. Call ISLA at 735-2965-66 if you are interested in promoting ISLA’s art programs on Guam.

Jeff’s Pirates Cove in Ipan Talofofo has a seaside museum featuring ancient Chamorro artifacts found in the Togcha coastline area. The museum is opened daily during Jeff’s operating hours.

The Guam Museum Cultural Display can be found at the Micronesian Mall 1st floor, North Wing C4. The display is open from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM daily and admission is free.
